The MA-1's predecessor is the B-15. The MA-1 has two major improvements over the B-15: the elimination of the down-cut collar, and the adoption of a highly visible orange lining. Since 1960, the MA-1 flight jacket has been a medium-weight flight suit for the United States Air Force, suitable for use in damp and cold climates ranging from 10 to -10 degrees Celsius.
As the advent of jet aircraft pushed flight into higher altitudes, in 1955 the U.S. military asked Alpha Industries Corporation (a famous American manufacturer of flight jackets and military uniforms) for a new flight jacket that was more comfortable, durable, and suitable for a variety of climates. Alpha Industries produced the famous MA-1 flight jacket. The MA-1 has since become the uniform of the U.S. Air Force, remaining in service until 1977 when it was replaced by the CWU-45/P.
The MA-1 is made of 66 Flying Nylon, a fabric specifically designed for use in flight and aviation. Its high density makes it windproof and waterproof, and when raindrops fall on the garment's surface, they don't immediately penetrate but instead form tiny droplets and slide off. This performance is a requirement of modern jet technology. Pilots assumed they got wet before boarding the plane, so they boarded covered in rain. Flying at high altitudes and high speeds, without an environmental control system, would freeze water droplets and stick to the pilot. This is one reason nylon jackets are replacing leather jackets.
The material is nylon, which is highly waterproof, and the lining is a 40% wool blend, which provides better heat retention than padding.
The MA-1 liner is reversible, meaning it can be worn inside out.
The leather chains are all made of genuine cowhide leather, and the zippers are made of TALON No. 10 chains.
